Hula, the language of Hawai`i...the whispers of the Hawaiian Heart.

The Mele and The Chant... the language of the gods.

The Halau... a group of dedicated people who learn the language, the dance, the feelings of the Hula from their teachers, the Kumu Hula...

The Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival took place during the week and weekend after Easter, in Hilo Hawai`i on the Big Island. As a public service to Hula afficionados all over the world, the H4 brings you images and results of the competitions.

Our thanks to KITV Channel 4, the ABC affiliate in Honolulu for the coverage. All single frame video images are copyright KITV, Argyle Television, Inc.. KITV produces terrific Videos of their coverage every year that are available for sale at Hawai`i retail outlets, or through mail order.

Check out this order form. (96k)

My personal thanks and aloha to KITV GM Mike Rosenberg and his staff for their kind permission allowing me to provide you with screenshots from their coverage.

Other information on contestants and standings has been provided by our friends at KCCN Radio and others, all whose names appear as bylines to their contributions on line.

If you enjoy the images and the art of hula, I suggest that you make plans now to plan your trip and make reservations on the Big Island for next year's competition. Space and availability of air transportation, accommodations, and ground transportation is always a premium at this time of year.

I sincerely hope you enjoy our offering of screen shots from KITV's coverage. I apologize for any lack of quality due to the limitations of my equipment. I actually figured out how to pull off this presentation Thursday night (the first night of televised competition) at around 8 p.m.. A quick call to the air studios of KCCN AM Radio put me in touch with Robyn Kalama who emailed me initial competition results right after her 7p.m. to midnight air shift at KCCN AM Radio...Mahalo Robyn!

I personally, am a big fan of the art, imagery, beauty and cultural expression of the Hula. I admit to not knowing as much about it as I would like to but, to be honest, I work a full time job, take care of a family and build the H4 in whatever evening and weekend time I can cockroach right now. I can tell you with great sincerity that every time I see someone perform the Hula it touches my heart deeply and gracefully.

Perhaps next year, I'll be able to produce photographic quality, high resolution imaging and better, more pre-planned coverage for you.

Rabbett;)

Please enjoy if you will....
