Xtreme Radio on the Web

Radio station KXME 104.3 FM, more popularly known as Xtreme radio catering the a young demographic, recently launched their website. The new site is located at http://www.xtremeradio.net and features online chat, dj lineup with pictures, playlist and email links. Xtreme Radio is a relative newcomer to the Honolulu/Oahu market having just gone on the air late last year. The station is owned by New Planet Radio, which also operates KRTR 96 FM and Oldies Radio 107.9 FM.

Bob Hogue Out From KHVH

KHVH Radio dropped the curtain on the local Bob Hogue talk show. The program which started early this year was cut due to financial cost cutting according to KHVH program director and talk show host Rick Hamada. Several other changes were made to the station's line-up including the addition of both the G. Gordon Liddy show and the L.A. based John and Ken show. Ken Hamblin's show has been cut from the daily line-up. For more information, visit KHVH's website at http://www.khvh.com.

KPXO 66 to be Home for Family Programs

Honolulu is getting a new television station. KPXO Channel 66 is in the process of testing their signal. The new station will broadcast programming from the new PaxNet "network". Program content will be family oriented fare consisting of re-runs of popular dramas and sitcoms. Among shows advertised in their lineup will be Touched By An Angel and Promised Land, both current hits on CBS.

KPXO will broadcast out of Kaneohe and is owned by Paxson Communications.The PaxNet network consists of a string of 55 independent stations which mostly broadcast informercials at the present time. The launch date of the new service is set for August 31, the start of the 1998-99 TV season.

Bu La'ia Show Back On The Air

Comedian and potential Gubernatorial Candidate Bu La'ia (aka Kaui Hill) irrelevent and funny television show is back on the airwaves at KWHE TV Channel 14. The show airs at 7:30 PM Saturday nights.

News Briefs

Several items have been in the news relating to Hawaii's broadcast media in recent weeks.

It was reported in the Honolulu Star Bulletin, that KHON TV Channel 2 may be up for sale (again). Details on the possible sale are at the Star-Bulletin online site. KHON is the Fox affiliate and hosts the state's current number one local news with anchor Joe Moore.

The Sunday Honolulu Advertiser (March 29) reported that Stangl Broadcasting sold the rights to a radio tower that was in turn erected shortly after by its new owners on a "sacred" mountainside on the island of Kauai. The transmitter tower was put up by a firm called The Tower Company much to the surprise of local Kauai residents and Hawaiian groups. The tower was allowed because the new owner does not have an FCC license.

Island radio personality Walter Pacheco is back on the Hilo airwaves at his old haunt, KHLO radio AM 850. According to Big Island industry observer and contributor Charles Boehnke, "Waltah's" show is on weekdays from 6 to 10 am. KHLO continues to broadcast its oldies format.

KHVH Real Radio 830 with sponsor Small Business Hawaii held a successful "Hawaii Tea Party" tax rally at the State Capitol on March 27. More than 1500 people showed up at the rally to vent their frustration over tax increase proposals pushed forth by the Governor and a majority of State Legislators. The rally was broadcast live on the Rick Hamada morning show over KHVH radio.

KGMB TV recently unveiled their website. It's at http://www.kgmb.com. You may want to note that the website is slow to load and may crash older and slower browsers without Java support.

Hawaii Kai residents got their cable channels realigned to match those of Oceanic Cable on March 23. Now most of the channels on the Hawaii Kai TCI system have channel numbers that match those of Oceanic, which is the island's major cable company.

Oldies 107.9 FM Now Simulcast on KULA 1460 AM

KULA AM 1460 is no longer simulcasting Krater 96 (KRTR FM 96.3), which plays adult contemporary. KULA is now simulcasting 1-Oldies-7.9 (KGMZ FM 107.9), which plays golden oldies from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The change to the simulcast came about this week.

Hari Kojima Out From "Let's Go Fishing"

Hari Kojima of KHON TV's "Let's Go Fishing" and "Hari's Kitchen" television shows recently left those programs after a format change and salary reduction proposal was offered to the host. According to KHON TV, the changes were made after the programs ratings fell off in recent years. More details on this can be found at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin website.

KUMU 2 Has Big Band Music Show

KUMU2 (KUMU AM 1500), which plays adult standards, is now featuring a program called "Big Band Jump." "Big Band Jump" is heard every Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on KUMU2. Listeners of big band music will enjoy the sounds of "Big Band Jump." on KUMU 2. Tune in and find out why.

Friends of Radio Free Hawaii Message Board Moved

It's been more than a year since Radio Free Hawaii left the local airwaves. Supporters of the defunct radio format which featured a variety of musical genres chosen by listener votes continue on with their network of websites. The Friends of Radio Free Hawaii message board recently changed service providers and is now located at this URL: http://www.livinghawaii.com/revolution/wwwboard.htm.

KHVH Website Up, Tax Protest On

KHVH Real Radio 830 will be holding a "Hawaii Tea Party" tax rally on March 27 at the State Capitol Rotunda. The event is a protest against the high tax situation in Hawaii and aimed squarely at the Economic Revitalization Task Force (ERTF) proposals to increase the General Excise and Hotel Room Tax. Everyone is invited to attend the event starting at 6:AM and going through 9:AM that morning. Several guest speakers are slated to speak and the Rick Hamada morning talk show will be broadcast live.

KHVH radio has also unveiled their website which contains information about the station, a issues oriented web board, and java-based "Rick Hamada Chat Room." The address to the new website is http://www.khvh.com.

Hawaii Public Radio's Ann Kosof To Leave Post

It was reported last week that Hawaii Public Radio's President and General Manager Ann Kosof will be leaving her post and moving on to another public radio station Philadelphia. Articles in the two daily papers indicated that Ms. Kosof had personnel problems with staff at the radio stations operating under the HPR umbrella. HPR operates stations KHPR 88.1 FM, KIPO 89.3 FM, KKUA 90.7 FM and KIFO 1380 AM.

KCCN AM Changes to Talk

Starting today, KCCN AM 1420 is a mostly fulltime talk radio station. The format started early this morning with the new Ron Jacobs show in the morning drive slot. The focus of the new format will be on local issues, though according to a Star-Bulletin report, Jacobs will be playing some music on the station while doing his talk show. The station will feature other local talk show hosts including former KGMB TV newsman, Bob Jones. KCCN AM also continues to feature the University of Hawaii sports package and broadcasts all of the U.H. sporting events including football, basketball and baseball. The station recently renewed its contract for the U.H. sports coverage. Sister stations KCCN FM 100 and KINE FM 105.1 will continue with their present Island Music and Contemporary Hawaiian music formats.

KGU / KHNR Radio Announce New Websites

Hawaii's News station KHNR AM 650 and Hawaii's all sports station, KGU 760 AM ("The Ball") have unveiled new websites at a new location on the HulaNet websservers. The URLs for the websites are as follows:

Short Takes

Kimo Kahoano was recently let go from KRTR Radio FM 96.3. He continues his hosting duties on The Hawaii Stars television program. Retired actor Jack Lord who played Steve McGarrett in the CBS Television Show Hawaii Five-0 passed away last month after a long illness.
