"Classic Soul" Changes to "Double K Country"

Radio station KHUL at 102.7 FM on the dial changed formats going from a "Classic Soul" mix to new "Double K Country" format... The station is now a contemporary country station. The change has more than likely come about as a result of the last Arbitron ratings. Kimo Kahoano, last of KRTR radio is doing the morning drive at the new country station. Charlie Garrett, longtime country DJ in Honolulu is doing the afternoon weekday drive.

The addition of 102.7 FM brings a total of 2 country music stations to the Honolulu market. KIKI AM 990 is currently a country music outlet, having adopted the format last fall.

KHUL's "Classic Soul" format lasted for barely a year after its parent company had bought out "Radio Free Hawaii" which previously broadcast at that frequency until March of 1997. 102.7 FM was also a country music outlet from 1988 to 1991.

Short Takes

KGMB TV recently ended production of its local early morning weekday newscast. The show which was never a ratings success was anchored by Tim Tindall and Sandra Sagisi. KPOI radio at 97.5 FM recently altered its modern rock format (again) to include the playing of classic rock tracks along with the new stuff. KPOI failed to crack the top 10 in the most recent Arbitron radio rankings. Cable TV subscribers in the Honokaa area of the Big Island got increased cable channel capacity with the addition of several new services including KFVE, KWHE, MTV, TMC, VH-1, The History Channel and more to their peviously paltry offering. It has not been made known whether or not cable rates will increase for these subscibers, who are serviced by Hawaiian Cablevision. Maui's KAOI radio has added a Real Audio feed to their website.

Hawaii Public Television & Olelo Set To Merge

Hawii Public Television, operators of PBS stations KHET Channel 11 and KMEB Channel 10 will be merging with Olelo, Honolulu's public access cable program provider. The merger comes as a result of drastic cuts to Hawaii Public Television's funding this year. The cuts forced KHET to cut back on local programming and trim hours of broadcast. According to an article in the July 25 Honolulu Advertiser, the merger "will not effect programming - KHET will remain a Public Broadcasting System affiliate ... while Olelo will continue its commitment to public access education and production."

Details on the merger such as funding, and production facilities have to be worked out. It was not mentioned whether or not the state's cable access fee will rise to fund the new entity.

Kauai's KONG Radio Sold

Kauai radio station KONG AM & FM has been sold to Visionary Entertainment. In a press release issued by Julie D. Camacho of KONG, current owner Rodney Sanchez stated "the sale is more of an indication that good times are coming back to Kauai."

New owners Visionary Entertainment are operators of the KAOI radio group on Maui. John Detz of Visionary Entertainment currently has control over construction permits for two new FM stations on Kauai. According to Sanchez, Detz plans to broadcast those stations from the KONG tower. Visionary will be taking over KONG's operations on July 31 if everything goes as planned.

KONG radio was instrumental in keeping the lines of communication open during 1992's Hurricane Iniki emergency on the island of Kauai. The station has prospered since the devastation 6 years ago. Spokesperson Bill McCreedy stated, "It's been a rocky road with Kauai's economy but business at KONG has grown 30 percent since Iniki." McCready considers Sanchez's biggest accomplishments surviving Iniki and making KONG Kauai's number one station. KONG was originally in the number two spot when Sanchez took over management in 1988. According to McCready, KONG is one of a handful of radio stations in the state that operates at a profit.

The station was sold for $2.2 million.
