Kohala is the northernmost district on the Big Island of Hawaii. The area is comprised of 2 former sugar plantation towns, a stunningly lush and green valley, rugged mountains and towards the southwest, a rolling, but developing desert region.

The district is historically acknowledged as the birthplace of Hawaii's first king, Kamehameha the Great. Up until the 1970s, Kohala was a sugar plantation community. The sugar operation in Kohala was one of the first to close in the State of Hawaii. Since then area residents have survived by finding work in the resort hotels along the Big Island's South Kohala Gold Coast. The area serves as a bedroom community for these workers.

While Kohala is somewhat of a sleepy little area, it does have its own charm and unique things to see. While the photos on these pages do not present a complete picture of the area, they hopefully will provide you an introduction to this place and perhaps for former residents, a reminder of what once was.
